Immanuel - God with us

Psalms 2:7
"I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

Though it seems many Jews at the time of Christ were seeing a Messiah that was not necessarily divine, Scripture is clear that the Messiah would be begotten of God. Look at the Hebrew word for “begotten”:

This passage shows God himself bringing forth, begetting, a child - of His seed – sharing in his divine DNA. Could the only begotten of God be anything less than divine?

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Definition

  1. single of its kind, only
    1. used of only sons or daughters (viewed in relation to their parents)
    2. used of Christ, denotes the only begotten son of God

This passage clearly sets apart the Son of God being the only begotten of God. Whoever believes in this only begotten Son will not perish but has everlasting life. Is it possible to believe in the deity of this Son, Jesus Christ and not have everlasting life? That would certainly fly in the face of John 3:16 – would it not?

Should the Old Testament saints have known that the Messiah was God?

Psalms 68:18
Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

This passage supports the name “Immanuel” or “God with us”. It is hard to imagine anyone reading the Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah and not recognize that He was to be divine. Is it possible? Do people read the Bible and miss that Jesus is God? Certainly - one can read the Word and still not believe, whether they were before the time of God incarnate or after.

The OT saints had faith in the one true God by way of His revelation and were saved. Just as we are saved by faith in the one true God by way of His revelation - Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
